Bio Note: I live in Dandridge, Tennessee with my spouse, adult daughter, and Yorkie, Victoria. Having lost some mobility as I aged, poetry writing and reading is a favorite activity. My writing credits include a memoir published in 2019 and poetry published in numerous venues including Verse-Virtual.
Some Things Never Change
In the 70’s, I was an ambitious cook of the “Suzy homemaker” persuasion. Believed literally the old saw,” the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Baked almost daily, some creation that involved flour. Pounded bread dough before mechanical aid was available; copious quantities of cookies, cakes, pies, filled my kitchen with tantalizing aromas. Weekly, the Bisquick with its coffee-cake recipe, conveniently printed on the box, came into play in my busy kitchen. This cake was a simple, fool-proof endeavor, just sweet enough, but not so cloying that a sugar coma resulted. My battered, small, round pan was ideal, this aluminum tin traveled many miles, lengthy years until it disappeared, like my spouse who first ate this toothsome tidbit. Today’s Bisquick box no longer features that recipe, but never fear our omnipotent internet is always, near. A few mouse-clicks provides a connection to that 70’s confection. Today, I baked this old tried and true treat, with a round pan far too large. No worries, improvisation is the hallmark of an old cook; I adjusted cooking time, easy-peasy. Out of the oven emerged a flat, coffee-cake pizza. It’s no problem, I never said, “If I’d known you were coming, I’d have baked a cake.”
