Bio Note: I reside in the tiny town of Dandridge, Tennessee with my spouse and 5-year-old Yorkie, Victoria. My adult daughter also lives with us part-time. I have a memoir published in 2019 by Bambaz Press titled Godsmacked: A Memoir of Mania, Mayhem and Mischief. My poetry has been published in Tennessee Magazine, The Mildred Haun Review and Verse-Virtual.
Summer Doldrums
My childhood spent in north Texas prepared me for sun-soaked days and sweaty nights, often sleepless in hot, muggy rooms. Drought accompanied this extreme heat. I relocated to eastern Tennessee where moderation in weather was key until summer 2024. A long arid spell gripped the hills and valleys with the tenacity of crabgrass. It was hot, muggy, and miserable. It’s raining a little now. More than a mere drizzle, but less than a much-needed soaker of a downpour. My lawn is yellow, brown, and green, a patchwork seldom seen. Lush foliage in all its myriad hues normally delights my senses. This anomaly of dryness produced an unpleasant Remnant from my childhood in Texas, stickers. As I roamed through our garden, I spied these culprits lurking underfoot. Poised, with evil intent, ready to pierce any unprotected flesh, or torment the Yorkie. Rain is forecast for the foreseeable future. I long for a few days of drenching gulley washers that create temporary ponds for transient ducks. That welcome sight of sprouted mushrooms looking as if fairies hid underneath could wash away the memory of malevolent stickers. I want a toad strangler of a loud thunderstorm to flood all evidence of tacky, pink, plastic flamingo flocks huddled around neighbor’s mailboxes.
Toilet Paper Saga
Toilet paper, a subject for heated debate, or an opportunity to pontificate on personal preferences in bathroom tissue. Some individuals believe a toilet paper roll should always roll over; others choose an under spin for their paper. To be fair, a majority don’t care how the roll, rolls. Most folks have strong opinions about how a roll twirls, but as long as it unfurls with ease, people are pleased. Unshakable beliefs persist about toilet paper’s qualities and challenges. Extra strength, multi-ply and mega-rolls are a popular choice, but don’t overlook extra plush, and rolls with a cushioning touch that are easy to flush. Choices are vast, unlike the past, when bathroom tissue options were few. In bygone eras, you could choose a color like pink to match your vanity sink. Scented paper was also available for those who had a discerning nose. Toilet paper, so many complexities and options are offered today, perhaps we should consider a bidet.
