The Veil
The T.V. news is a litany Of our predicament of doom Reinforced by the haze and the dark. I walk to forget. On this day of gloom The lake, hidden by a white veil Billowing as the wind blows, Becomes translucent. The gossamer curtain parts For the first act. Brackish gray water appears Then, the fog covered far shore. The sun, a faraway disk, Eats away the veil. Trees emerge, green and vibrant. A white swan drifts by. Yellow daisies smile Among dead reeds and dying summer flowers. A seagull croons. An ibis flies toward the sun. Runners race on white gravel paths. Bikers swoosh by, A blaze of bright yellow and crisp lime green, Their glistening helmets smile at the sun. The curtain falls Like a soft cotton blanket Masking the evil underneath. A snake hisses and slithers beneath, Waiting for a time to strike, The veil returns, Hiding the viper.
