Author's Note: My wife and I often discuss the disastrous effects that inequality is having on societies around the world. And at the same time, acknowledging that we have always had enough. We laugh about our young-parent definition of "independently wealthy", which was "being able to buy a new pair of shoes without going hungry." It's a definition we have kept in mind as we have matured and our tastes have sometimes outpaced our income.
poem beginning with an exultation
rejoice, o my soul, rejoice! is this not as easily spoken as 'alas' or 'woe is me'? standing in quiet meditation should i not rejoice? today the morning came again, and i arose to inhale fresh petrichor, the incense of life i stood, i walked, i ate, i bowed in quiet gratitude for warmth, for love, for shelter paying heed to paul's advice* that having food and raiment i should be therewith content * 1 Timothy 6:8 KJV
