Bio Note: For the past six years, I have been co-organizer of the annual Poets Picnic, a large outdoor poetry event on the grounds of the Open Space Visitor Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The all-day event includes poetry readings, music, workshops, poetry vendors, food trucks, and a haiku hike. It also includes a chapbook, which includes a single short poem from each person who submits to it. This week, with my cohort Dale Harris, we finished making decisions on the poems to be included in the nature-themed chapbook, one of the many tasks that need to be completed well before the May 2023 date of the Picnic. Lots of work, but lots of reward, a giving-back to the huge poetry community in New Mexico.
Chinese Cabbage
She waits in the bottom bin tightly wrapped, a lump of oyster-white folds and pale green pelts. She is too pallid in complexion, too bound to maneuver, but she doesn’t think about moving. In her confinement, away from the distractions of carrots and tomatoes, she meditates. She waits for you to put an ear to the fridge, feel the hum of her animated om, make her into something special.

Editor's Note: If this poem(s) moves you please consider writing to the author (email address above) to say what it is about the poem you like. Writing to the author is what builds the community at Verse Virtual. It is very important. -JL
