Bio Note: Since I was a child I have been fascinated by the weather and the solar system. Like human beings, things in outer space and in the atmosphere have very complex relationships. These poems describe the Sun in three different ways: a patient and persistent lover, a self-involved, attention-seeking man, and an abusive father. This poem was written in response to a prompt that were shared with me by the leaders of an online poetry group that comes to life each April for National Poetry Month.

Unspeakable

he visits her
uninvited

after her creation,
to him merely
an object, offspring
of hot desire.

she overhears
ragged rumors whispered
by the stars;
“he keeps his children helpless,
revolving around him,
all existence at his whim.”

Sol can be an angry sort
thus Luna keeps her distance
hiding behind Mother Earth
lest his fiery hands shake her
slap her
punch her
adding fresh bruises
to her silent face.
