Bio Note: I’m a self-employed commercial sculptor. Pandemic protocols destroyed my business opportunities during 2020. During months of boredom, I discovered creative writing as a suitable antidote. My poems have been published in numerous online and print journals (including this one).

Child's Play

The child plays a harmless game
parlayed with hand gestures:
Symbols of powers that
yield or dominate in turn.

Rock, Paper, Scissors.
Rules of engagement are clearly defined.
Scissors cut Paper,
Rock crushes Scissors,
Paper covers Rock.

Winner resolves the conflict.

The soldier plays a deadly game.
Gestures become thrusts. Belligerent
forces yield or dominate in blood.
Rules of engagement no longer apply.

Rock becomes Earth:
Disputed territory demands power
of position and resources.

Paper becomes Flesh:
Armies, dedicated to defend,
committed to conquer.

Scissors become Sword:
Lethal weapon wielded
with intent and purpose.

Earth, Flesh, Sword.
Sword cuts Flesh.
Earth crushes Sword.
Flesh covers Earth.

No winner.
