Bio Note: I am dull and uninteresting. But I’ve recently published poems in Hudson Review, Tar River Poetry, NC Literary Review and the famous elsewhere. In 2019, a manuscript of my poems crashed into the lunar surface carried by Israel’s Beresheet Lander. In 2021, I was inducted into the NC State Computer Science Hall of Fame.

Escaping the Shadow

The only way to outrun your shadow
is to enter the darkness, to unknow
lanterns, the stars, and, most of all, moon-glow.

But what of flames? Those you must try to hide.
Take them as glowing coals. Put them inside.
May you burst, shadow-free and satisfied.

New Year’s Day

When Day opened its doors
and said “Get up! Come in!”
We almost said “No more.
We won’t do that again.”
This is how it begins.

All night, the walls closed in.
The ceiling came lower.
Our feet couldn’t find the floor.
Nothing where it had been.
Darkness unlike before.

But now, the Day puts things
back just where they once were.
The old familiar.
Yet, we found shelter in
the comfort of Night’s skin.

We wear it as armor
against the knife of Dawn.
In honor of what’s gone.
Let us whistle Night’s song.
Let us outshine its stars.
