Bio Note: I began writing poetry several years ago at nearly age 65, after concluding a long career as a business attorney. Among my foremost poetic inspirations are Langston Hughes, Dorothy Parker, and Robert Frost. My poems have appeared in The Lyric Magazine, Lighten Up Online, and Grand Little Things, in addition to Verse-Virtual and other fine online and print journals.
Rationalization
He’s still hungry. He already had a full dinner, But he feels hungry nonetheless. He knows he shouldn’t eat again today. It causes weight gain, Interferes with sleep, Breaks the commitment he made to himself. But he’s got to eat something. He’ll consider it part of tomorrow’s breakfast.
Cornered
On bleak street corners stationed, Seeking anything, Barely even noticed, Fellow human beings. Far too many of them, For handouts or just “hi.” But feeling humanness decline As you walk right on by.
Winding Path
Oh God – if I could only start Life over I would change so much! I’d get a lot more early love, With kinder words, a gentler touch. I’d thus be more secure and poised And know when not to give a damn! I’d have success throughout, and then End up exactly where I am.
