Compassion’s Carriage

A week after Thanksgiving
I see a family huddled
outside the supermarket door—
three generations of women
taking turns holding a sign
with one word: Hungry

Shopping carts pass back
and forth, wheels wobbling—
soon it will snow
the sidewalk growing colder—

Inside, the produce already
starting to rot, milk spoil,
the meat and fish turning sour.

We think we know
what it is to suffer
but keep our eyes and ears
tuned to what is coming next:
the squeaking wheel,
the bump over the curb
the car’s protective shell.
