Bio Note: The idea for this poem came about when I attended my writer’s group meeting wearing a new pair of mittens...the tops thickly covered with sequins. The members were surprised by this glitzy accessory since I am usually a conservative dresser. But once in a while I surprise everyone with a dash of unexpected sparkle from one of my wardrobe anomalies, as described in the poem.
Flamboyant Excess
I have new black mittens, with multi-colored sequins on top – shiny bits, gleaming, glittery spangles. A Mickey Mouse t-shirt is part of my wardrobe – a tinsel-enhanced, stylish statement, deep sparkly touches paired with broad black and white stripes. Mickey’s ears, covered with shimmery black baubles, match my beaded, chandelier earrings. (A girl I once met was wearing ruby red slippers, shoes covered with scarlet sparkles – almost stole them right off her feet). I answer to no fashion police – to no advice on what’s proper for an aging matron. Engaging in the unexpected is good for the soul..... wait ‘til you see my rhinestone Elvis jacket.
