On the Way Down
Skipping along the attic hall in orange blossom light. The sheer stairway grooved with black rubber treads to make sure you don’t slip. At the top of the stair with a bucket, cleaning each step – listening to Gordon Lightfoot. Was it Spring cleaning? Where were you? I must have been young. It was before university – before falling in love – because the song was so simple and the water warm and not much else to confuse things.
