Bio Note: I'm a retired English Professor spending my time writing, taking the occasional photograph, trying to follow the Dharma. My poetry collections Time is Not a River and Morning Calm are both available on Amazon. My manuscript A Matter of Timing won the 2020 Poetry Society of Texas’ Catherine Case Lubbe Manuscript Contest (publication: Summer 2021).
A Simple Act
Sitting across from a friend drinking afternoon tea, watching her peel an apple— the scent of the fruit rising like the mist from a mountain stream. Reminding me of long lunches at my grandparent’s house— their hands with skin like rice paper wielding a sharp knife cutting away the red road to the apple’s crisp and fragrant flesh in one long continuous loop. A simple act— what is memory but an outer membrane covering a fruitful life, the taste of snow, the crunch of time.
Appears in my poetry collection Morning Calm (2020).
