Bio Note: I recently began writing poetry at nearly age 65, after ending a long career as a business attorney. My strong preference is formal poetry, though ironically the poem which has inspired me since childhood is Langston Hughes’ free verse masterpiece "Mother to Son".
Outperformed by Pain
If friends or family should feel
Inferior to you,
Not caused by anything you did
But what life turned into,
It will not matter how you act
Since all respect conveyed,
Will be by their embarrassment
Relentlessly outweighed.
