Bio Note: By profession I am a Psych Nurse Practitioner, having gone from hospital RN to staff RN in a jail to Family Nurse Practitioner and finally to mental health. Poetry is one of several creative outlets for me, and has led to three full length collections: a clear day in october, do you hear it? and most recently, leave a light on. You can find info on the books and my other hobbies on my website..
Author's Note: I happen to like a lot of Christmas music, but sometimes I think people get carried away. Here's my response to a well known Christmas song.

little drummer boy
i wonder if you know, little one how badly you've been maligned in the years since we started singing you how scoffers have derided you endlessly for what they have imagined was the din of a child who knew nothing of gentleness a child who must have had a penchant for loud, banging, clanging, noisy, irritating drum solos fueled by heavy metal aspirations they are so wrong, little drummer, so very wrong. i picture your small hands poised above a darbuka, ready to play the gentle rhythms of peace-songs to imitate the clip-clop of donkey hooves that carried the resolute mother of God into bethlehem on a clear, starry night had you been a modern percussionist, dear one, you would have carried a single snare drum, belted to your waist armed not with sticks, but brushes your rum pum pum pum muted with awe the swish swoosh an echo of the womb the christ-child so recently left fading with a slow decrescendo as the tiny baby slipped into sleep rum pa pa pum rum pa pa pum
