Author's Note: I am now, and have been for as long as I can remember, a "night owl." I force myself to get to bed, force myself to get up early for work, and I've never adjusted to a daytime schedule. This poem is basically an unfulfilled wish.
come night
come night! full of mystery dark and foreboding blanketing the harshness of the bright relentless day i do not fear you come night! cover me with quieting sleep with soft forgetful dreams remove the cloth that binds me to reality and drop me in a boundless surreal sea where time floats or flies at my command come night! swaddle me in cradles of comfort— mind and soul and body will sing and dance drink from a fountain of renewing come night! when you have run your course gather gently 'round me you must not rush away but fade reluctantly as though i were a love you hate to leave
