When Nature Says No
They pulled from our bellies old egg sacks deemed defiant all the never to be babies we'd longed to hold Instead our arms swim air empty of water flail when in sleep Sounds of baby cries awake in us the stillness a silence without song Shadow-selves unstitch and by the wayside discards its empty soul our details without lines The shadow facts at a glance when groceries when laundry when the cold can be cuddled How the arms just so cradles comfortably comforts none for my friend who will never read my poem "When Nature Says No" as she is this poem and poems never read themselves
