I am an occupational therapist in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I have written since I was teenager but still grow more enthralled with the act of writing every week. For ten years I have been lucky enough to live in a quiet house on a quiet street with a fine and quiet lady named Renee. I have two married daughters. I have one good bull dog. What more could I ask for? edrpoet.com
CLEANSED OF RESTRAINT
Pablo Picasso, “Assemblage, Bull’s Head”
This is a boy’s dream of a bull.
Could lope over the meadow
easy as cycling sun-drenched
Parisian streets.
A kind old bull,
would nestle you
along the fence-side
with weathered horns.
Enough to lift a ranch-hand’s heart
after a day of heavy bailing; as sundown
pours lava across the pasture.
Picture these things kick-standed
at the old Spaniard’s quarters.
I think even the discarded hubs
still spin - made eternal; spin the way
a roulette wheel reels on
inside the bourbon-fueled
brain of a sleeping gambler.
You gotta close your eyes
to mount this one, Buckaroo.
Ride! Let the clouds lift as
you luff over the hill, as breeze
flaps your corduroy shirt. Raise
that arm in rodeo circles, cowboy;
go easy along the horizon
now that the old Spaniard has
cleansed our eyes of all restraint.
