I’m a retired English teacher (high school and college) with 53 years of marriage, two children, four grandchildren, one dog. I’ve had poems in Poetry, The American Scholar, The Tennessee Review, Yankee, and others!
New Light
Something about being able
to stretch out on the floor
next to the dog and pat
her stomach, makes me glad—
glad my legs can move;
glad my hands can move across
the wire hair; Glad I can own a dog
and walk her outside without a leash,
so she can pee privately. Glad
she wakes me up at dawn.
Glad a creature so unlike me
understands so much. How did I
not realize all this earlier in life?
