​The cosmic speck of me joined the universe
by way of my mother and my father
my brothers and my Grandmother Akers
Granddaddy and Grandmama Huddle her
kitchen his tool shop his dusty office
the help Harvey Sawyer Monkey Dunford
Thelma Lucy Uncle Will Washington Peaks
work horses cows chickens a mule the food
they ate the way they talked my dad’s music
my mother’s reading books aloud to us boys
the Wytheville radio station daffodils lilacs
cigarette smoke the weather bumble bees
my grandparents’ fighting at Sunday dinner
my parents’ deep care for us and each other.

Where’s Your Faith?

​
I believe in art which takes us beyond
ourselves gives us all it’s got but remains
indifferent if we don’t understand
or like or care about it art explains
us to ourselves by way of our senses
lets us live all of human history
births us kills us then brings us back to life
again says pray though nothing’s listening
lingers in our minds lives in our dreams
tells us not to fear winter it always
yields to spring and the dark only seems
a threat it thinks we’re okay softly says
try to get some sleep now don’t worry
just close your eyes I’ll tell you a story.
