Weeding Borders
I tell myself: It’s important
to have borders, even—especially—
with those I love.
Like my garden, those borders
often fail. It starts imperceptibly—
the long phone call, the night
when work means I spend less time
with Stan, crafting a syllabus.
Things creep in, taking—
because I let them take.
This morning I noticed
two garden beds,
no borders left—grass
and weeds had slipped in:
How did I miss that?
I got on my knees and started
pulling, almost frantically. Creeping
Charley, some almost
three feet long, came out as I
cursed each strand. Tonight
I’m going to sit by Stan
and not talk about work,
neaten the border, make it
possible for beauty, slowly,
to come into blossom.
