January 2015
I am a retired high-school English teacher from Potts Camp, Mississippi. Life in general and my grandchildren in particular inspire me to write. I especially enjoy writing--and reading--rhymed, metered poetry and mourn its near-demise. I stay busy with a variety of activities at home and church.
Open-Carry Gun Law
At Sunday service
I found myself mystified
by something shiny.
It was Granny's gun
holstered, hanging on her hip.
She smiled so sweetly.
Nodding nervously,
I put my eyeballs back in
and stared straight ahead
at—You guessed it!—a
pistol protruding from the
pastor's pants pocket.
I must get used to
people packing heat in church.
The law says they can.
The Good Times
The twenty-somethings watch the clock.
They bide their time till it strikes five.
The work day's done. It's time to rock,
and suddenly they come alive.
They rush away into the night
to meet their friends and have some fun.
The world is theirs. The stars are bright.
Their nightly party has begun.
The sixty-somethings bide their time.
They're worn out and the clock seems slow.
The thought of rest is so sublime,
and home's the place they long to go.
Their nightly party is a meal,
a little TV, bath, and rest.
That warm, soft bed holds great appeal,
and early bedtime is the best.
The young and wild, the old and tame--
they all pursue one basic goal.
Although their lifestyles aren't the same,
each wants to LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!
