I'm a husband, a father, a grandfather, an uncle, a friend, a pianist, a composer; I'm a poet, a painter, a piano tuner, and a retired music teacher. I'm a relatively observant Jew and a diehard socialist. I'm 64 years old and live in NYC with my wonderful wife, Susan. And even though I don't have a college degree in English, I am the editor of the best online community poetry journal in the world.
Thanksgiving in the Emergency Room
The woman in the bed on my left has
cancer. She's screaming in pain.
A doctor just gave her the choice
between oxycodone and dilaudid.
The man on my right is coughing so
hard it sounds like he's going
to burst. I just heard a nurse
tell him he was admitted.
This morning I woke up feeling
lightheaded and out of breath. I
came here in case I was having
another heart attack.
It's not about turkey and stuffing,
or even pumpkin pie.
It's good enough to be thankful
that you're still alive.
