I left my hometown of San Francisco, California, in 1978 for a long hitch-hiking trip around the Mediterranean, ending up in Messina, Sicily, where I still live. I teach English at the local university. My poetry has appeared in Frigg, Strong Verse, Ink Sweat & Tears and others. To relax, i play the banjo, follow baseball, take summer walks on the PCT and blog at www.emartinpedersen.com.
The Phosphorus Sharing
I hold the sheath of the sliding paper box
Push the drawer
Easy inside from out
Then my index and thumb attempt to separate
One thin Lucifer match from the pile
Lifted and held with forefinger near the tip
Backhand I swipe the head on the sandpaper flank
Once twice until the pressure is enough
Flame bursts grows settles rises
I turn the lit match down and move deliberately towards the candle
Stick to the wick until the sharing takes place
When transfer is complete the shriveled wood has done its work
I pull it away and blow to deprive it of air
Kill it. One life over, another begun.
