I'm nobody! Who are you?
-Emily Dickinson

[Conversation broken]
Conversation broken
For lack of things to say
Barely had we spoken
When our words gave way
And so we sat together
Looking at the floor
Exhausted by the weather
We didn't look for more
To elevate the atmosphere
Alleviate our gloom
But chose instead to navigate
The distance in the room.
[You walk on]
You walk on
The path that
Wanders through the
Woods on its way
To the rapids
Down below the
Falls
And you are
Fourteen and
It is 1965
And your mother
Just died and you
Are left with
A father you
Can't talk to
And you smoke
Cigarettes
By the
Waters of Babylon
And you remember
The songs of
Zion
And when the
Trees ask you
How you are
You whisper
Three words
I am free
[An ordinary thing this chair]
An ordinary thing this chair
Built of common wood
And yet it seems to have a soul
Perhaps it somehow took
The secret of a sleeper
Who was resting here
And when he left -- his dream remained
Part of the furniture --
[Sunset -- the most tender time of day]
Sunset -- the most tender time of day
When ending ever makes the spirit sigh
And the silence of the watercolor sky
Stirs within the soul as if to say
Heaven's come to earth but cannot stay --
You look around -- the mountains seem to cry
As the flowers turn their faces so to try
To hide their sadness at the sun's last ray.
But then comes evening with another view
As the message of The Muse arrives to tell
All passengers that hope replaces fear:
And night falls with magic -- magic anew --
With sparkling stars that cast their silver spell
Even as promises of gold again draw near.
[Come with age the songs]
Come with age the songs
Quietly like leaves
Floating through the maples
In the farm-fresh air
And everyone belongs
And everyone believes
That supper's on the table
And home is still somewhere
