I am attorney and writer living in Arlington, Virginia. I have two books to my name: Unknown Sands: Journeys Around the World's Most Isolated Country, a first hand account of traveling the central Asian country of Turkmenistan and a legal reference book that has nothing to do with poetry. I keep a blog on books and poems on an unscheduled basis, http://compulsivelyaimless.blogspot.com/
It Was Fun For A While
You wake up
to the dreamy sunlit sky
frothed with cumulus clouds
riding the winds
but behind the controls of an airplane
with no one aboard.
Out of Order
Old feelings
of young love
came to me
in the first season
as a last resort.
Not Myself
I’ve been put in this position before.
Waking up in the middle of the night
to utter phrases
not my own
(and with no one to hear them).
Shadows of the Road
Conspiracy of long leaf pines
strike the road
with slatted shadows
An off-kilter picket fence
pointing to the setting sun.
Dark Odyssey
(Inspired by Patrick Leigh Fermor)
In dark latitudes
beyond the mountains
clouds gather
fluorescent and frosted
in a disturbing array
shivering
with summer lighting
Unknown figures
in the wilderness
bode ill
with spells and charms
keep close
to spreading spokes
of campfire light
In unreported river islands
lies an atmosphere
of pre-historic survival
where children look
like the adults
the refuge of an otherwise
extinct species.
