Bio Note: I’ve been a long time away from V-V because of my 5-year obligation as Colorado Poet Laureate, which ended this
summer, freeing me finally to do some writing (revising, actually) and get back up on the Submission horse.
I am native of Denver, Colorado, and feel that high-plains light is part of my heritage. At least it’s what I hope for in my work. I direct and teach in the Professional Creative Writing program at the University ofDenver’s University College and live with my yoga-instructor wife in the mountains southwest of the city.

Narcissus
This stalk of paperwhites (Narcissus papyraceus), its gnarled bulb awry in a cramped pot, has slumped beside the sink and huddles now against the vanity mirror. Although its faint musty scent’s too honest for joy, it flaunts a flag of snowy petals. Can it be this plant feels pleasure, seeing its figure echoed by the glass? I know I do.
