Country Abecedarian
all’s noisy in the country. bees bombinate wildflowers. cows bawl complaints. deer bell dominance. equines whinny greetings. foxes yelp a land claim. geese gabble at a cat, and a hummingbird tchee-tchees other birds away from the flowers. I whistle bird style ~ tu-whit tu-whoo ~ just like a mockingbird, and a morning owl answers, kicking up a mule’s braying laugh. licking my hand, the barn cat’s tongue scrapes like sandpaper. manacled ribs vibrate waves of cicada buzz, the screech noise joins bleating lambs and grunting hogs. often crows gather in murders cawing the news. peace in the country is a bucolic notion. Even the city can be quieter with the clatter and roar of taxis, trucks and sirens. roosters crow day and night in the country. squawking hens range free and cackle. twitter is robin-speak. Wrens warble down the sun until frog peeps and cricket chirps fill a very dark night, clear enough to shimmer and shake the Milky Way, where there’s no x-tra charge for the generator’s roar keeping milk cold, and yes, Canada geese honk overhead, eagles shriek, jays chatter. zzz, sleeping with an open window lets in the symphony—a brass band plays.
