Note: My dream life is more active and colorful than real life, thank goodness. Real life is filled with reading, writing, dog-walking, leading workshops, and cooking. Both lives reveal a bit of anxiety, though when awake I try to squash it. www.donnahilbert.com

An elf has picked me to go first
at a poetry lecture series.
My handouts are complete, but there
are not enough to go around. Though
my glasses slip from the perch of my nose
and I have not rehearsed, I plod on.
No one thinks my jokes are funny
or my examples apt.
It is Falcon Day. Falcons fill the sky,
and people fill the fields below. Everyone
runs in the direction of bird flight,
looking Elizabethan, like a movie
Midsummer Night’s Dream.
O happy, happy, day,
orange balloons on long strings!
I serve communion from a loaf of bread
a little dish of butter on the side.
The celebrants want me to butter the bread
before placing it on their tongues.
I say, “For God’s sake, this is the body
of Christ, not brunch!”
