Response to Rosetti’s “Song”
when i am dead, my dearest,
don’t capitalize anything. dance
in the rain. chew on old branches.
fill your hands with wet moss. lie
naked in a field of your favorite
flowers. when i am dead, my dearest,
i am but loving you the same way
with different hands.
Author's Note: In the following poem, the line in italics is from Wind in a Box, by Terrance Hayes.
the day the bombs started falling like angels from the sky
i was in my abuelita’s house
helping make coffee liqueur -
then this: a shadow blooming
an inch above the carpet,
the avocado trees in the backyard
small, foreign, a burnt matchstick
body in its matchstick casket. a
siren’s song from afar, the wide
eyes of my brother filled with soot.
the slow breath of a drowned
memory, careful not to
breathe in the flames.
