NOTE: "The Miracle Of Ordinary Life" closes my ninth book of poems DARK ENERGY. I first had the idea for this poem when I was seriously ill and looking out the window of the diner I often go to. The neon signs for Chase and Drug Mart looked simply beautiful. So do the trees outside the window of my apartment as I type this.
THE MIRACLE OF ORDINARY LIFE A play of ours that's done, a poem that's read, A night of making love, a children's park, A television flickering in the dark, A boring rainy Sunday afternoon Are all that differentiate us from the dead Who tell us both in dreams, "We'll see you soon." We talk about our memories through the night. You try to comfort me. I hold you tight Till one of us falls asleep. The other can't, Is too afraid to take a sleeping pill. The other wakes from nightmare in a pant And says that time is stronger than our will. We had so many years of being ill. Be thankful just for sleeping through the night. |
