"Star Gazing" is a reminiscence of my father beginning with a child's point of view and then as an adult when roles are reversed. I am pleased to announce that my poetry collection, As Pus Floats the Splinter Out, is now available from Amazon.com.
Star Gazing
Along the flashlight beam my father’s glove
gestures toward the Gemini of his son.
His unseen voice from the sparkling dark above
explains how those boys can’t help but run
with animals around life’s prickly trail.
He traces them, two heads seemingly as one,
they shake hands, each desiring a separate prevail.
His boots break the brittle lights of frost.
And older, I understand immensity in a brief tale:
how humble men are heroes, never lost
in regretted indecision. So in a father-son aligning
I know an inner frontier has been crossed.
Now I companion him in his gentle declining—
his outline, star to star, is all that is shining.
