I teach high school English and raise my 4 kids in Indiana. My kids are the illustrators of my last book - Indiana Noble Sad Man of the Year (Wolfson 2017). They each have several illustrations complimenting the poems. Right now it's horribly cold in Northern Indiana and I'm reading Thomas McGrath, John Hodgman, and Patricia Smith. Sitting in a Plastic Lawn Chair in My Own Back Yard, Indiana, May 2015
A neighbor’s mower just quit,
bird sounds echo in the trees.
The shriek of car and motorcyle
to the distant right. Here, the maple tree. There,
the soccer net, the neighbor’s still trampoline.
I’ve got a novel, a book of poems,
a notebook, and a lager.
The kids are fed and settled.
The dishes stay undone.
I am not wasting my life.
