I retired from the SUNY Buffalo English Department in 2004. Have published a dozen or so collections of poems. Such my addiction to the sport of squash racquets my headstone is to read: "ONE MORE GAME?" See more of my poems HERE.
THE GIFT OF LIFE
In memory of Lionel Trilling
The age's principled ingratitude,
a viscous cant of self-begetting,
as if we realized, fulfilled a self,
who are indeed fictive and empty,
transparencies where eyebeams cross:
the points of intersection blaze
into sight, a sudden glory, light
looks back at light, star sees star,
and together are the shining of heaven.
And now and now and now an eye blinks off.
Unseen, I feel invisible, destroyed.
And every eye will shut away the luster,
and we and all will be again
the volatile nothing, and clear clear dark.
