In My Most Recent Dying Dream
my heart slowly erupts
like a resurrected volcano in Thira,
grinding of flood lights
on the marquis of North Park theatre,
like the roar of the MGM lion,
Ginsberg on one of his rolls,
scream of the winch lowering
Leonard’s body in a plain pine box.
Like the groan I let out
swinging my legs out of bed,
the surge so hard to describe,
one that knocked me to my knees.
While down there, I couldn’t help but think
of Cohen in Madison Square Garden,
then look up, glassy-eyed, squeeze out
I love you as in an overacted ‘30s movie.
Then the scene goes silent and black,
credits roll and declare:
Dreams don’t always die. Sometimes, they linger.
