Gift
In the mall I look for a gift
for Emily Dickinson. She’s tough
to shop for. Behind hankies
and perfumes I see a sale
on mountains, some barren
and rocky, little decoration.
A wildflower would look
almost out of place.
Some blossoms spring open,
purple and yellow brimming
over pebble tops. I’ll take that one.
I won’t go to her grave.
She’s not there—she’s in
a slant of light,
her presence clear. Here,
Emily, take your mountain,
one that we can climb
to learn a raindrop’s secret
desires.
