I met the gifted composer, Carl Hammond, thirty years ago and we became real friends. A citizen of the USA, he was living in Australia for quite a few years. His gypsy spirit eventually took him elsewhere but our friendship remained. Imagine, though, my amazement and sense of honour when I found that Carl had created a beautiful chorale piece to the words of one of my poems, “Morning light is filled with gold”. The link to a recording of the piece is beneath the poem. I blog at windofflowers.blogspot.com.au
Morning light is filled with gold
for Diana
Morning light is filled with gold
of delicate, transient hue;
the noonday sky is beautiful
with its deep and ethereal blue;
the momentary grandeur in the west
is repeated transforming delight,
followed by that changing mystery,
the silken lustre of the night.
O they can boast of their display
but I will count our love more rare:
say they have no voice to speak, no lips to kiss,
no minds to knit, no hands to care,
and in repetition they come then fade away,
whilst my flawed love grows with each passing day.
