It was not her death, but her name, Miosotis Familia, that prompted me to mark the cruel loss of this mother, nurse, policewoman, and public servant, killed on duty, July 5, 2017 in Bronx, NY. This brief dirge reflects my childhood memories of Lake Myosotis (Albany County, NY) and my affection for the low-lying ‘forget-me-not,’ or myosotis selvatica.

Officer Miosotis Familia
Forget-me-nots Miosotis Familia, daughter of our city, was struck by fatal shots through an open window. Daughter of our city, We will tell the sorrow through an open window and scatter azure petals. A flower of the meadow with gold in the center gave its name to Miosotis and to a hidden upstate lake. Sunset, gold and azure, trembles on the lake coloring the darkened water. We will not forget her. |
