I’m retired from my work as a microbiologist and later as a psychotherapist. I love the freedom to do as I please, to create handmade one-of-a-kind cards or sew quilts, or work on poetry, dipping in and out of it like a tern running along the shore. By reading and writing poetry, I come to terms with my obsessions. www.JoanMazza.com

Don’t say moving forward
Don’t say pivot, fake news,
false flag. Don’t say migrants.
Don’t say, whatever, awesome.
Say Philandro Castile, Tamir Rice,
Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin.
Say bees, bats, and butterflies.
Say clean water, clear skies.
Don’t shrug at floods, fires
famine, warfare. Don’t say,
Perfect storm, Post-racial America.
Don’t ignore the poor and homeless.
Don’t tout executive privilege.
Don’t wave your flag of double
standards, claim God’s will. Don’t
cry, Not fair! or Witch hunt!
Say yes to education, yes
to questions that make
politicians squirm. Say yes
to answering truthfully. Stop
making excuses and blaming
others. Get to work. Our time
is running out. Only in dreams
does water run uphill.
